Conditions Specific to Skin of Color Basics
People belonging to the skin of color group, including African-Americans, Asians, Latinos and other ethnicities, are more prone to certain types of dermatologic problems than are people with lighter skin tones. This is due partly to genetic make-up and sometimes even cultural practices.
For instance, despite people with skin of color have increased natural protection from ultraviolet (UV) radiation due to the high levels of melanin in the skin, pigmentation problems are more common because the cells that create the melanin pigment are more reactive to inflammation and injury. It is important for skin care providers to understand the nuances of different skin tones and help patients of color by diagnosing and treating these specific conditions on a case-by-case basis.
Conditions Specific to Skin of Color Treatment
Examples of conditions specific to skin of color that we provide treatment for:
Hyperpigmentation – Hyperpigmentation is the result of an increase in melanin in the skin. It can be caused by exposure to sunlight, pregnancy, Addison’s disease, or various drugs including certain antibiotics, antiarrhythmics and antimalarial medicines.
Hypopigmentation – Hypopigmentation is the result of a reduction in melanin production. It is most commonly caused by damage or trauma to the skin including burns, infections, pimples and blisters that lead to discoloration of the skin. Treatment options, while limited, include topical creams, light or laser treatment, and surgical skin grafting.
Scars – There are three main forms of scarring: Hypertrophic (most common), Keloid, and Atrophic; the main differences coming from the physical makeup of the scaring and the skin complexion of the individual. Scarring is typically caused by any physical injury or medical procedure where the skin was compromised.
Xerosis (ashy skin) – Xerosis is abnormal dryness of the skin or mucus membranes. Older people are typically affected more by this condition that causes dry, itchy and red cracks on the skin. Treatments for Xerosis include moisturizers and topical steroids.
Acne - Acne is a skin condition in which pores on the skin surface become irritated and undergo a light infection. The result is red, white, or black bumps which swell up with puss. These bumps are sometimes called “pimples” or “zits.” Most acne infections are temporary and can be treated with over-the-counter medication. However, moderate-to-severe or reoccurring acne infections can require professional medical attention and treatment.
